Introduction

The long-term functional outcome of tibiotalar arthrodesis (Ankle joint fusion) is not known. In general, arthrodesis at one joint laces additional stresses on adjacent joints, leading to later degenerative changes of those adjacent joints. This study will investigate through a patient survey the functional abilities of patients who have had tibiotalar arthrodesis at the University of Michigan Medical Center between the years 1956 and 1981.

Materials and Methods

The goal of this study is to describe the functional ability of patients who have had ankle fusion. Specifically, functional outcome will be measured through standardized surveys: SF-36, the Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment, and the Ankle and Foot Module. Demographic information, patient perception of ankle fusion outcome, and pain in other joints of the foot will also be evaluated with a patient identification form.

Progress

The study has received Institutional Review Board approval. Medical records are currently under review for identification of potential study patients.
