REVIEW OF PATIENTS WITH HIP JOINT FRACTURES: POSTERIOR WALL ACETABULAR FRACTURES

Participants: J. Goulet, D. Hak, M. Ghalambor, K. Wu, M.L. Greenfield

Keywords: hip joint fractures, acetabular wall fractures, functional outcome, SF-36

Introduction

The purpose of this study is to examine the outcome of surgical treatments of fractured hip joints. Outcomes include the patient's well being, quality of life, and functional outcome following injury and surgery. We are interested in correlation between these outcomes and surgical treatment including surgical indications, operative techniques, and perioperative care, and postoperative rehabilitation.

Materials and Methods

Subjects 18 years or older, treated for posterior wall acetabular fracture will be invited to participate in a phone interview for approximately 40 minutes duration. During this interview the SF 36 will be administered. Medical records of study participants will be reviewed to determine surgical treatment procedures and postoperative rehabilitation.

Progress

Study methods are being developed to define clinical results in terms of potential confounders such as quality of reduction, marginal impaction, dislocation of femoral head, time of reduction, associated pelvic injuries, and fracture pattern. We have reviewed 100 medical records and the radiographics associated with approximately 50% of these records.
